For MSPs & IT services

AWS cost optimisation for MSPs and IT service providers

MSPs carry two AWS problems at once: your own estate, and the aggregate waste across every client account you manage. The second is also an opportunity — cost findings you bring to clients are billable value, not overhead.

Run the free scan on your own management account first — it is usually the most surprising one.

Where MSP AWS estates leak

  • Offboarded clients, live resources. Client leaves; their monitoring agents, backup jobs, bastion hosts and log shipping stay. Offboarding runbooks cover contracts and credentials — rarely the infrastructure spun up to serve them.
  • Per-client tooling duplication. Each managed account got its own monitoring stack, jump boxes and backup infrastructure, sized generously. Twenty clients later that is twenty sets of shared services where centralised tooling would do.
  • The management account nobody audits. The MSP’s own account — where the tooling lives — is always the least examined. Cobbler’s children: we routinely find more waste percentage-wise in MSP management accounts than in the client accounts they manage.
  • Unused reserved capacity. RIs bought for a client workload that has since changed shape or left entirely, still billing monthly. Reservation coverage needs reviewing every time a managed workload changes — it rarely is.
  • No per-client cost story. Without rigorous tagging or account separation, you cannot show a client their true cost — or price your management fee against it. Cost clarity is a commercial asset for an MSP, not just hygiene.

Frequently asked questions

Can you scan client accounts we manage, or only our own?

Any account you have authority over — the scan is a read-only role deployed per account, so consent and scope stay explicit per client. Many MSPs run the free scan on a client account and present the findings as their own value-add; the audit then prices per account.

Does cost optimisation cannibalise our managed-services revenue?

The opposite in practice: showing a client 20% waste you found builds the trust that renews contracts, and remediation work is billable. The MSPs losing revenue to cost issues are the ones whose clients discover the waste themselves.

The scan is read-only — a role you create and delete, no keys shared — and shows your estimated monthly saving before anyone talks about money.
